State song of Gujarat
LyricsNarmadashankar Dave, 1873
Adopted2011

"Jai Jai Garavi Gujarat" (pronounced [dʒəj dʒəj ˈgəɾ(ə)ʋi ˈgudʒ(ə)ɾat]; "Victory to Proud Gujarat") is a poem written by Gujarati poet Narmadashankar Dave in 1873. It is used as a state anthem during ceremonies of the Government of Gujarat.[1][2]

Composition[edit]

Narmad is considered the first modern Gujarati writer. He wrote the poem in 1873 as the foreword of his first Gujarati dictionary, Narmakosh.[3][4][2]

In this poem, Narmad epitomises the sense of pride in the region by identifying the region of Gujarati people. He delineates the boundary within which the Gujarati-speaking population live: Ambaji in the north; Pavagadh in the east; Kunteshwar Mahadev near Vapi in the south; and Somnath, Dwarka in the west. This region mentioned by him now forms modern-day Gujarat, the western state of India.[3][5][2] At the end of the poem, Narmad gives hope to the people of Gujarat that the dark clouds is lifting, and a new dawn is about to emerge.[6]

In 2011, the composition sung by various Gujarati singers was released by Government of Gujarat.[1]

Gujarati original[2] IAST Romanization English translation

જય જય ગરવી ગુજરાત!
જય જય ગરવી ગુજરાત,
દીપે અરુણું પરભાત,
જય જય ગરવી ગુજરાત !

ધ્વજ પ્રકાશશે ઝળળ કસુંબી,
પ્રેમ શૌર્ય અંકિત;

છે દક્ષિણ દિશમાં કરંત રક્ષા, કુંતેશ્વર મહાદેવ;

રત્નાકર સાગર;

Jaya jaya garavī gujarāta!
Jaya jaya garavī gujarāta,
Dīpē aruṇuṁ parabhāta,
Jaya jaya garavī gujarāta!

Dhvaja prakāśaśē jhaḷaḷa kasumbī,
prēma śaurya aṅkita;
Tuṁ bhaṇava bhaṇava nija santaji sa'unē,
Prēma bhaktinī rīta
Ūn̄cī tuja sundara jāta,
Jaya jaya garavī gujarāta.

Uttaramāṁ ambā māta,
Pūravamāṁ kāḷī māta,
Chē dakṣiṇa diśamāṁ karanta rakṣā, kuntēśvara mahādēva;
Nē sōmanātha nē d'dhārakēśa ē,
Paśvima kērā dēvachē sahāyamāṁ sākṣāta,
Jaya jaya garavī gujarāta.

Nadī tāpī narmadā jōya,
Mahī nē bījī paṇa jōya.
Vaḷī jōya subhaṭanā jud'dha ramaṇanē,
Ratnākara sāgara;
Parvata uparathī vīra pūrvajō,
Dē āśiṣa jayakara sampē sōyē sa'u jāta,
Jaya jaya garavī gujarāta.

Tē aṇahilavāḍanā raṅga,
Tē sid'dhrarāja jayasiṅga.
Tē raṅga thakī paṇa adhika sarasa raṅga,
Thaśē satvarē māta!
Śubha śakuna dīsē madhyāhna śōbhaśē,
Vītī ga'ī chē rāta.
Jana ghūmē narmadā sātha,
Jaya jaya garavī gujarāta.

Victory to proud Gujarat!
Victory to proud Gujarat,
Where shines glorious dawn,
Victory to proud Gujarat!

Thy scarlet flag marked with love
and valour will shine;
Teach thy children everyday,
the way of love and devotion.
Your kind is high and beautiful,
Victory to proud Gujarat.

In north, Goddess Amba [is situated],
In east, Goddess Kali [is situated],
In south, Kunteshwer Mahadev protects (Gujarat).
Somnath and the lord of Dwarka
are the gods in the west and ready to protect.
Victory to proud Gujarat.

Have seen rivers Narmada, Tapi,
Mahi and others.
And seen wars of valiant warriors,
and the sea with enormous resources.
From the top of the hills,
Our gallant ancestors are blessing for victory. Unite all castes.
Victory to proud Gujarat.

That past glory of [ancient capital] Anhilwad
and king Siddharaj Jaisinh.
Will be surpassed in near future,
O Mother!
The night has over and the omen are good,
the noon will beseem.
People dance with Narmada.
Victory to proud Gujarat.
