Andre Beteille,(born 30 September 1934) is an Indian sociologist and writer. He is well known for his studies of the caste system in South India.[1]

Early life[edit]

He was born on 30 September 1934.

Career[edit]

Dr. Beteille receives the Padma Bhushan from the President of India A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, c. 2005.

He was a Professor of Sociology at the Delhi School of Economics at the University of Delhi where, since 2003, he remains Professor Emeritus of Sociology.[2] He was appointed National Research Professor by the Government of India in 2007.[3] He is a recipient of the Indian civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan and also FBA.[4] He also served on the Social Sciences jury for the Infosys Prize in 2010.

Presently he is the Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya [5] and prior to that he was the Chancellor of Ashoka University.[6]
