Raiganj is a city in the Uttar Dinajpur district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the headquarters of the district.

History[edit]

According to the legends, Pandavas settled around in the area during their period in exile. This area was ruled by a succession of mighty kingdoms. However, it was during the rule of the Dinajpur Raj Ramnath (1722-1760) that it got its distinctiveness. On 15 August 1947, when India was granted independence, the area was in a state of confusion, but when the Radcliffe Line, demarcating the borders between India and Pakistan was published on 17 August 1947 Raiganj, then in the undivided Dinajpur district, was placed in India and the new district of West Dinajpur was created. On 1 April 1992, West Dinajpur was bifurcated and Raiganj became the headquarters of Uttar Dinajpur district.[1][2]

Geography[edit]

Raiganj is located on the broad plain of the Kulik River.[3] Raiganj Municipality was formed in 1951, and it covers an area of 10.76 sq km.[4]

Demographics[edit]

According to the 2011 census, Raiganj had a population of 183,612. It had a literacy rate of 81.70%. Hindus formed 97.37% of the population.[5]

Economy[edit]

Raiganj is an important trade center for agricultural items and jute. Rice milling is an impotant industry.[3]

Transport[edit]

Raiganj railway station came up in 1889, when the Assam Bengal Railway extended its Parbatipur metre gauge line to Kathihar. After partition of India the line was bifurcated. The Barsoi–Radhikapur branch line was converted to broad gauge.[6][7]

National Highway 12 (India) (NH 12), previously NH 34, is a National Highway in India which runs entirely in West Bengal. It runs from its junction with NH 27 at Dalkhola terminating at Bakkhali.[8]

  • Debinagar Gayalal Ramhari Girls’ High School, established in 1963, is a Bengali medium, girls only institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. The school has a library with 2,180 books and it has 22 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[15]
  • Raiganj Girls’ High School, established in 1933, is Bengali medium, girls’ only institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a library with 2,450 books and it has 26 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[16]
  • Raiganj Coronation High School, established in 1911, is a Bengali medium, coeducational institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a playground, a library with 1,000 books and it has 30 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[17]
  • Raiganj Sri S.R. Bidyabhawan, established in 1951, is a Bengali-medium, coeducational institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a playground, a library with 5,071 books and it has 19 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[18]
  • Raiganj Mohanbati High School, established in 1951, is a Bengali medium, boys only institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a playground, a library with 3,000 books and it has 12 computers.[19]
  • Raiganj Ten Class Girls’ High School, established in 1970, is a Bengali medium, girls only institution having facilitates for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a library with 2,527 books and has 20 computers for teaching and learning purposes.[20]

Healthcare[edit]

  • Raiganj Government Medical College and Hospital was established in 2018, incorporating the District Hospital.[10]
  • Raiganj Super Specialty Hospital is a 500 bedded hospital housed in a G+9 storied buildings. It is one of 42 super specialty hospitals built in the state with funds from Backward Regions Grant Fund.[21]
